Message from the General Co-Chairs

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to participate in the 2020 IEEE International Conference on Visual Communications and Image Processing (VCIP 2020).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the first time that VCIP is conducted in virtual mode. In fact, the Organizing Committee was closely monitoring the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic since January 2020. While it is our wish to have a face-to-face conference, the safety and well-being of the conference participants are always our top priority. Given the uncertainty of travel restrictions, we decided to change the delivery mode of VCIP 2020 to virtual in August 2020. We believed that such decision would be beneficial to all conference participants and remove the uncertainty the participants might face in their attempt to join VCIP 2020.

The theme of VCIP 2020 is Visual Communications and Image Processing in the AI Era. In recent years, we have witnessed the spectacular success of deep neural networks in many visual communications and image processing applications. While they introduce new methodologies, new demands, and also new research directions in many different disciplines, we are also aware of their difficulties due to the time-consuming model training, tedious label acquisition process, and the huge demand for computing resources for edge applications. New researchers certainly want to know the current advance; those who have been working in the area for some years are keen to know the way forward. We hope some answers will be provided through the technical program of VCIP 2020, which has been tailored designed to focus on this theme.

When designing the technical program of VCIP 2020, we have the belief that we should continue the legacy and reputation of VCIP on technical excellence. We are pleased to let you know that the quality of papers submitted to VCIP 2020 is outstanding. Due to the limited presentation timeslots, the Technical Program Committee can only select the best papers from a large number of quality submissions, which has proved to be a difficult task. The resulting program is an aggregation of innovative works in different traditional and emerging areas in visual communications and image processing. This year, we received many submissions from the industries. It shows that visual communications and image processing is a fascinating domain for academic. In addition, it has attracted much attention from the industry. These submissions demonstrate the achievement of the industry in VCIP and also their interest and demand.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Organizing Committee members for their support and consistent effort to make this Conference a success. We would also like to thank our plenary keynote speakers whose talks will definitely be the highlights of the Conference. Our thanks are also extended to all Area Chairs and reviewers for their dedication in upholding the quality of the technical program of VCIP 2020.  We would like to thank all authors for contributing their original works and presenting them at the Conference. And we also wish to express our gratitude to Tencent Media Lab and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for financially sponsoring the Conference. Last but not the least, we would like to thank the IEEE CASS Visual Signal Processing and Communications Technical Committee for their unfailing support throughout the course of the preparation for the conference.

We are ready to welcome you for a memorable VCIP 2020!
